The Urban League of Lancaster County (ULLC) has been awarded a $2,000 grant from the Verizon READS Foundation in support of its youth literacy initiative. The grant monies will be utilized for materials (books, pencils, folders, educational DVDs and other related supplies and resources) to support the summer and after school programs provided by the Urban League's Youth Educational & Support Service (YESS) program led by Ms. Zetltha Ellis. In addition to providing instruction on basic reading skills, the YESS program gives involved youth an opportunity to participate in computer research and culturally relevant writing activities.
Chris Brennan of Verizon will present the grant award check at the ULLC headquarters on August 6, 2009 at 11:00 am. City Councilman and ULLC Board member Jose Urdanetta will attend the presentation. The public is also welcome to attend. The ULLC is grateful to have the support of the Verizon READS Foundation as it pursues its mission of education and youth empowerment.
