The overarching mission of Good Schools Pennsylvania, where Dave Smith serves as Central Pennsylvania Regional Manager, is educational access and equity. Good Schools Pennsylvania was launched in 2001 to remedy the fact that educational opportunity across the Commonwealth was significantly unequal, largely due to an inequitable state funding mechanism. To achieve this mission, Good Schools Pennsylvania engages the community in a grassroots campaign for education reform. Community members work to inform and enlighten public officials about education in Pennsylvania and how it can be improved.

Dave Smith’s educational and professional background has been diverse and wide-ranging; from graduating from Moravian Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity, to being Director of Camping for the South Mountain YMCA, to ultimately working with Good Schools. One thing that has held true through every professional experience is Dave’s commitment to education and advocacy. Dave Smith began working with Good Schools Pennsylvania in August of 2001. From that very first day, he has worked nonstop to inform citizens and public officials about the consequences of an inadequate education. Dave remembers that day well and says that, “On my first day of work I was introduced at an Administrative training with the School District of Lancaster. Immediately following the introduction, Donna Cooper and I went out in a hallway and sat on the floor while she, from memory, gave me 15 pages of names and phone numbers of people she wanted me to call that afternoons to get on board with Good Schools. Since then, there has not been any let up in the work to ensure that every child in Pennsylvania has a quality education”. Since that time Dave has worked with determination to mobilize citizens of all ages to become engaged in the movement for school funding and education reform. Dave’s philosophy, and that of Good Schools, is that all children can succeed in school when given the appropriate support. To date, Dave has delivered more than 500 presentations to educators, churches, business leaders and civic groups to encourage participation in the Good Schools campaign.
