The YWCA is an organization in the Lancaster community that exemplifies the Champions of Diversity award criteria of “promoting diversity by building bridges within our community, empowering others to improve their lives, and promoting inclusion in the local community”. Their commitment to “Championing Diversity” while a part of their mission which is “to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all, is realized through the work of their numerous programs to effect change within the community. Examples of the Y’s ability to building bridges and promote inclusion within the local community is demonstrated by “Day of Commitment” which brings together diverse individuals for a meal and conversation. Similarly, “Study Circle Groups” provide a venue for participatory discussion groups that bring together people from diverse viewpoints and backgrounds to discuss race relations and build community. Further evidence of promoting inclusion is also seen in the popular annual Race Against Racism-a 5K run/walk which unites people of all races to demonstrate our community’s commitment to racial equality and opportunity.
Key to “empowering others and improving lives” is education. The YWCA accomplishes this through their Racial Justice Institute and Anti-Bias Curriculum. The Racial Justice Institute geared toward adults trains teams from area organizations to dismantle racism by developing a common framework for identifying racist behavior and effecting positive change in their organization and their lives. The Anti-Bias Curriculum, a school-based program serves to educate youth and break the cycle of prejudice, hate and racism.
